Latte Engineered Hickory 6.5: Handscraped Hardwood for Households That Actually Get Used
Two families can lay the same floor and have entirely different experiences of it. One has two adults, soft shoes and a quiet routine. The other has children, a dog, hockey bags by the door and visitors every weekend. The second household does not need a more delicate floor explained more patiently. It needs a different floor, and this is the one.
Hickory as a timber
Hickory is among the hardest and toughest of the North American domestic hardwoods, noticeably denser than oak, which is why it has traditionally been used for tool handles and anything else expected to take abuse. In a floor, that density translates into a surface that resists denting from dropped objects and heavy furniture better than most alternatives.
Its other defining quality is visual. Hickory flooring has a markedly more dramatic grain than oak, with strong variation from board to board, and that variation is itself a practical asset. A busy pattern gives the eye plenty to look at, so a single scuff or a small mark does not announce itself the way it would on a smooth, uniform surface.
What handscraping and distressing actually do
A handscraped surface is not flat. It carries gentle undulations and worked texture across each board, as though the timber had been dressed by hand rather than machined perfectly level. Distressing adds further character, so the board arrives already carrying the kind of marks a floor acquires over years of ordinary life.
The consequence is straightforward. On a distressed wood floor, a new scratch has nowhere to stand out, because the surface is already a record of texture and incident. This is the honest framing, and it matters: the floor is not harder to damage than any other wood floor, it is simply far better at absorbing damage into its appearance. For a household with pets, that distinction is the entire argument. Claws that would leave a visible trail across a smooth surface disappear into a worked one.
Living with it from day one
- Sweep or vacuum often, since grit is the real enemy of any timber surface.
- Clean with a barely damp mop and a product made for wood, never a steam mop.
- Wipe spills promptly rather than leaving them to sit at a seam.
- Keep mats at the doors and trim the dog claws, which helps every floor in the house.
- Felt pads under chairs and tables, and glides under anything heavy that moves.
- Run a humidifier through the heating season to keep the house in a sensible humidity band.
Construction, quantities and fitting
This hickory flooring is genuine engineered timber, a real hardwood surface layer bonded over a multi layer core, which holds its shape through a humid Ontario summer and the dry months of a long winter better than a solid board would. Each plank is 6.5 inches wide and 3/4 inch thick in random lengths. A carton covers 22.39 square feet and weighs about 55 lbs, and a pallet carries 940.38 square feet. The installation method for handscraped hardwood depends on the subfloor and the storey, so it should be agreed with our team rather than assumed, and the material needs to acclimatise in the room beforehand. Professional installation is strongly recommended. Please confirm the specification, the room suitability and your quantities with the Petun Flooring team before ordering.
The product photograph is a starting point, though a distressed wood floor is really one to run your hand across, so ask us for a sample and feel the texture before you decide. Latte is available for collection in Kitchener and Cambridge, inventory is limited, and arriving with your measurements lets us settle carton counts and an allowance for cuts together while you are here.
