Open plan main floors have one awkward habit. They produce very long walls, and every one of those walls has to be trimmed. Where a shorter stick forces you to join two pieces mid run, a twelve foot length often carries the whole wall in a single pass. That is the practical reason this 6 inch baseboard is specified so often on newer builds and renovated main floors.
Why joints are the detail people notice
When two lengths of trim have to meet along a straight wall, they are joined with an angled scarf joint rather than a butt joint, so the overlap can be glued, fastened and sanded into something close to invisible. Done well, a scarf joint disappears. The difficulty is that it never disappears completely and forever. Paint shrinks, houses move through a Kitchener winter, and a hairline can open up months later exactly where the two pieces meet.
Fewer joins means fewer places for that to happen. At six inches high by twelve feet long by one half inch thick, this board reaches across most hallways, family rooms and great room walls without a break in the run, and the eye travels the length of the wall uninterrupted. Where a wide board earns its keep
A wide baseboard suits rooms with volume. Large open living spaces, generous hallways and rooms with taller than average ceilings can all take this height comfortably, and it looks especially settled beneath windows and door casing of similar substance. In smaller rooms a wide baseboard is still workable, but proportion matters, so it is worth talking through your ceiling height with us before deciding.
Beneath the appearance, this trim and moulding does the ordinary work every base does. It closes the joint between wall and floor, and it conceals the expansion gap that a floating floor requires around its perimeter. That gap is not optional, and a wide board covers it with room to spare even where a subfloor is not perfectly true.
