Pisces Floorway: Water Resistant Flooring for the Damp Rooms of the House
Some rooms meet water by accident. Others meet it every day. A laundry, a mudroom and a bathroom all belong firmly in the second group, and they deserve treating as a separate problem rather than an afterthought at the end of a whole house order. Pisces from the Floorway range is positioned as water resistant flooring for precisely those spaces.
Rooms Where Damp Is the Normal Condition
A laundry deals with wet clothes carried from machine to basket, condensation on cold pipes, the occasional overflowing hamper and the small puddle nobody notices until it has been there an hour. A bathroom adds steam that hangs in the air twice a day and water that leaves the shower on the soles of two feet, so good bathroom vinyl flooring has to cope with both at once. A mudroom in Waterloo Region takes the worst of it from November onwards, when boots arrive loaded with snow, slush and road salt and then sit melting onto whatever is underneath them.
These are not spills. They are conditions. That is the distinction worth holding onto when you choose laundry room flooring, because a floor that shrugs off an occasional glass of water in a dining room is being asked to do something quite different here.
What a Hard Surface Does Around a Washing Machine
Appliances are heavy, they vibrate, and eventually they need to be pulled out. A hard, continuous surface lets you slide a machine forward on a board without tearing anything, and it lets you see a slow leak instead of discovering it months later through a smell. It can also be dried with a towel and simply carry on, which no soft floor manages well, and that is what makes a hard surface such sensible laundry room flooring.
The construction helps here. Vinyl plank is made as a printed decorative layer over a dense core with a protective wear surface on top, and the core in products of this type does not absorb water the way a timber based board would. Even so, water resistant flooring is not the same as impervious flooring. Seams, edges and the perimeter of the room are where moisture finds its way through on any floating floor, and standing water left long enough will eventually reach the subfloor.
Living With It Sensibly
- Deal with a puddle promptly rather than letting it sit, particularly along seams and at the walls
- Put an absorbent mat or a boot tray where wet footwear lands, and empty it
- Run the bathroom fan during and after showers so steam leaves the room instead of settling
- Check behind and beneath the washing machine two or three times a year
- Have hoses and supply lines checked periodically, because a burst line defeats any floor
- Discuss with your installer how the edges and thresholds will be sealed
Please Let Us Confirm Suitability for Your Wet Room
This is the one thing we would ask you not to skip. A powder room, a family bathroom, a basement laundry on a slab and a mudroom that floods each spring are four different briefs, and the right answer depends on the specification of the product and on how the room is built. Please confirm the specification, the installation method and the suitability of this product for your specific wet area with the Petun Flooring team before ordering, and we recommend professional installation, since sealing and detailing at the perimeter is where a damp room installation is won or lost.
Look closely at the product photograph, then come and see a sample in person, since lighting and screens never show a surface fairly. Pisces can be picked up in Kitchener and Cambridge while inventory allows and quantities are limited, so bring the measurements of your laundry, mudroom or bathroom and we will give you bathroom vinyl flooring advice suited to your actual room rather than a general rule.
