What the gap at the wall is actually for
A floating laminate or vinyl floor is not fastened to the subfloor. It rests on top as one large connected field of planks, and it moves. Ontario homes swing between humid summers and dry winters, so a floor takes on a little width when the air is damp and draws back again once the furnace has been running for months. The expansion gap left around the perimeter of the room is the space that movement needs.
Take that space away and the floor has nowhere to go. Planks under pressure lift at the seams, peak in the middle of a run, or press hard against a doorframe until something gives. Quarter round moulding is nailed to the baseboard, never down through the floor. That single rule is what keeps everything working. If the trim is fixed into the planks, it clamps the floor at the perimeter, the movement you carefully allowed for is cancelled out, and the gap becomes decorative rather than functional.
